Abstract

The present work deals with the analysis of the recent evolution of the productivity of the service sector in Spain and in Andalusia. The objective to be achieved consists, firstly, in studying how the productivity of the tertiary sector and the branches that compose it have evolved; secondly, to establish a classification of the different branches of activity based on the dynamism of their productivity, production and employment and, finally, to explain the reasons for the different behaviors of these branches in the different limits indicated. The time period of analysis will cover the present century, taking the Regional Accounts of Spain as the main data source. The results show that the reallocation of employment between sectors with low and high productivity only has a weak net impact on the variation in aggregate productivity, both in Andalusia and in Spain. On the other hand, the growth of productivity in some branches is much higher than the average for the tertiary sector, basically this occurs in the branches of information and communications and in finance and insurance.
