Reconfiguraciones de la transgresión de género y sexual en la modernidad temprana: el travestismo en Thomas de Quincey y Ricardo Palma

La figura de Catalina/Antonio de Erauso —la Monja Alférez—, nacida en San Sebastián en 1592, se forjó a partir de su huida de la vida conventual y la subsecuente adopción de una identidad masculina, a través de la cual desarrolló una trayectoria militar en el ámbito colonial hispanoamericano. Ampliamente conocida en el siglo XVII, su historia cayó en el olvido hasta ser recuperada en el siglo XIX gracias a reelaboraciones literarias como The Spanish Military Nun de Thomas De Quincey y "¡A iglesia me llamo!" (1872) de Ricardo Palma.
Mediante perspectivas poscoloniales y de historiografía queer, se evidencia que el relato de De Quincey sitúa las Américas en un marco exótico que legitima implícitamente la expansión imperial. Por el contrario, la versión palmina se inscribe en el proyecto criollo de construcción nacional post-independentista, afirmando una autonomía cultural aunque reproduciendo jerarquías de raíz europea. En estas reconfiguraciones, el rechazo de Erauso al conformismo de género deviene un espacio polisémico donde se articulan tanto la fantasía imperial como el discurso nacionalista criollo.
