Abstract

The creative aspects of gypsy people are dealt with by the social sciences in a global way, being normally associated to aspects like musicality and folklore. This is due to the fact that nomadic populations, being space-limited because of transportation, have also limited the development of creative activities like painting. Since the late twentieth century, some manuscripts facing certain issues related to gypsy craftwork and aesthetics have occasionally appeared. This paper
is presented as a review of the concept of Gypsy Art, particularly painting, dealing with this population as the main producer. Additionally, this work has tried to go through the historic trajectory of gypsy painting separated from other popular arts, with the aim of recovering those values that define its pictorial corpus. This corpus is ethnographically well defined and related to mimetic habits or symbolic deconstruction processes.
