EVIL AND DEMONIC POSSESSION: A Critical Analysis of Concepts of Pollution and Taboo

Abstract

The present paper is aimed at discussing the meaning of purity and danger in one of more important scholars in XX century. Under this profound perspective, M. Douglas constructs an
interesting bridge between the notions of taboo, hygiene, danger and contamination. However as already mentioned, her configuration by respecting to the opposition between in and outgroup magic actions should be critically reconsidered. Most specifically, devil possession not only contrast with findings that Douglas intends to argue but also upheld the causality of her
main argument.
