Abstract

REFILAB is a physical training intervention for the Prevention and Labor Physical Readaptation of street cleaning and waste collection workers (SC-WCW) of a municipal service company, included in the contracts according to art. 83 of the Organic Law 6/2001 of December of the Universities. The aim of the present scientific study was to analyzed the safety evaluation of the OLV-RRs with a history of low back pain; as well as to determine the differences between sedentary and active OLV-RRs in safety evaluation. A total of 52 male SC-WCWs aged 29-64 years (50.2±8.8 years) volunteered to participate in the study. Information was obtained from the SC-WCWs on the health-related safety assessment. Initially, 38.5% (n=20) of participants were initially not eligible for physical activity. Cardiovascular risk stratification was found to be low in 23.1% (n=12), moderate in 21.2% (n=11) and high in 55.8% (n=29) of participants. We found that active SC-WCWs had better health status than sedentary ones (p≤0.013; Hedges' g ≥ 0.749 [Moderate]) in terms of body weight, body mass index, waist and hip circumference, percentage of visceral fat and muscle mass. In conclusion, the high prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors in SC-WCWs with a history of low back pain demonstrates the need for physical cardiovascular readaptation in parallel with physical readaptation for low back pain based on normalization of body weight, body mass index, waist and hip circumference, visceral fat and muscle mass.
