Abstract

This article examines the relationship between art and identity, both personal and social, among students in the Plastic Arts program at the Universidad Laica Eloy Alfaro de Manabí (ULEAM). Based on surveys conducted with a representative sample of students, key dimensions are analyzed, including the importance of art in identity construction, the perception of a distinctive academic culture, and the sense of belonging to the university and its artistic community. The results show a strong identification of students with their artistic role, with more than 50% highlighting art as essential to their identity and 71% recognizing the existence of a particular culture within the program that strengthens group cohesion. Additionally, participation in academic and cultural activities significantly contributes to institutional belonging, with faculty support and community interaction being key factors in consolidating artistic identity. These findings highlight the importance of fostering spaces and policies that strengthen students’ artistic identity, promote recognition of their work, and encourage the development of an inclusive academic culture.
