Abstract

The drum box is a vernacular percussion musical instrument, which arises from the need to create new cultural memories linked to a modern trend based on the musicalization of the montuvias oral tradition. This instrument is made of popular woods from the Manabita field and also has bamboo inlays. Its structure is octagonal due to the acoustic richness that this design allows and to the octosyllable literary representation in the composition of the amorphous, thus assuming a representative identity and image. The loudness of the instrument is very organic and together with the performance of the percussionist recreates high-pitched sounds on his left side and low-middle sounds on his right side with a sound vent hole at the top. Carrying the rhythmic cell adopted by the montubios for the amorphous musical genre is the function of this instrument within this musical culture of the Ecuadorian coast.
