Cutting Across Borders: Contemporary Gibraltarian Writing

Guest editors: Elena Seoane & Cristina Suárez-Gómez

We invite contributions for a special issue titled Cutting Across Borders: Contemporary Gibraltarian Writing, which seeks to explore the evolving literary landscape of Gibraltar. As a space marked by complex histories, linguistic hybridity, and transnational influences, Gibraltar offers a unique vantage point from which to examine questions of identity, belonging, and border crossings in contemporary literature, as seen in the novels, short stories, and poems of writers such as M.G. Sanchez, Humbert Hernandez, Giordano Durante, Rebeca Calderon, Trino Cruz and Jonathan Teuma, among others.

We welcome original research that engages with Llanito/Gibraltarian writing from interdisciplinary perspectives, including but not limited to literary studies, multilingual literature, cultural studies, and postcolonial theory. Submissions may address, though are not limited to, the following themes:

  • Representations of identity, hybridity, and multilingualism in Gibraltarian literature
  • The use of Llanito in contemporary literary texts
  • Border politics and borderland issues
  • Comparative studies between Gibraltarian and other borderland literatures
  • Narratives of migration, exile, and transnationalism
  • The impact of colonial and postcolonial histories on literary production
  • Literary forms, genres, and innovations emerging from the Gibraltar context

We invite full-length research articles (5,000–8,000 words including abstracts, keywords, footnotes, and references), and look forward to receiving contributions that expand the critical discourse on Gibraltarian literature and its place within broader global conversations on borders, language, and identity.
