Abstract

This essay tries to provide a general insight into the symbol, considering its character, its function and its specific workings as a semiotic-cultural device. Through developing a critical
assessment about several theoretical points of view –namely those of Sperber, Lotman, Vygotsky and Ricoeur-, the work targets a reflection on the critical importance of symbolical
repertoire in every human society, because symbol represents a key factor both for genesis, coordination and reproduction of their way of life consistency, that is, right for the holistic
integration of the very cultural world that inhabits every group –working by semantic condensation and interconnection of its realms and dimensions of experience-. In this same
way, the essay outlines the basic and special role of symbolic forms and processes both for understanding and communication of life experiences of people: for setting up the conditions of possibility for them to adapt and conform culturally to a tidy model of reality
