Abstract

We look into the coherence of the views of each sector in the health system about the nurse’s role, and whether it is possible for female nurses to have an independent role, previously defined and accepted by all members of the health team. We would also like to find out about the clues of their motivation to develop their own role, as well as to what influence the typical female character of nursing staff and the cultural burden in the primary task, to take care of patients, gives. After the pertinent application of an ethnographic methodology by a period of something more than 2 years (2005-2007) on a population of nurse-supervisors, nurses,
medical doctors and managers who work in the primary and hospitable attention of Granada (Spain); we can conclude that the Infirmary has not finished coming off itself its feminine
symbology, persisting in addition the androcentric and cooperatives patterns of behaviour to the Medicine.
