Abstract

The university and school communities are subject to violent attacks ranging from intimidation to the murder of students, parents, teachers, managers and other personnel involved in education. Violently attacking the education system is a practice carried out by terrorists with the purpose of strengthening its legitimacy and weakening the power of the State: They kidnap, kill and destroy facilities. This issue is the subject of this article, the reports of UNESCO and the Global Coalition to Protect Education from Attack (GCPEA) are analyzed in order to know the evolution and worldwide expansion of terrorist attacks on educational institutions during the period 2007-2018, showing the consequences of terrorist violence in the educational process. It is established as a conclusion that there is an educational paralysis in countries that suffer terrorist attacks because it undermines the right to a decent and quality education for all. The article is divided into three parts: In the first part, the acts of violence and terrorism suffered by the university and education in the global context are addressed; in the second part, the historical evolution of violent and terrorist attacks in the world is shown; and in the third part, the impacts of terrorism on the university and on education are exposed.
