This study examines the evolution, technical characteristics, and significance of the piano-guitar duo within both academic and popular music from the 19th century to the present. Through a historical and analytical approach, it explores the early interactions between the two instruments, the timbral and dynamic limitations that affect their ensemble performance, and the strategies employed by composers and performers to achieve sonic balance. The research also highlights the expansion of the duo’s repertoire in the 20th and 21st centuries, including the influence of jazz and popular music, as well as its role in music education and increasing presence in concerts, recordings, and international festivals. By analyzing representative works and their reception, this study concludes that the piano-guitar duo has become a consolidated and versatile format, offering expressive and innovative possibilities within the contemporary chamber and cross-genre repertoire.
