Pedagogical Innovation and Museums: Strategies for Secondary Education Training

Abstract

This study analyzes the integration of museums as dynamic educational resources in initial teacher training and their application in secondary education. Through a mixed methodology combining systematic literature review (2010-2024), multiple case analysis of 12 Spanish museum experiences, and evaluation of 76 participants (future teachers, practicing teachers, and museum professionals), the impact of museum education on developing innovative pedagogical competencies is examined. Results demonstrate that systematic incorporation of museum experiences in teacher training significantly enhances critical thinking development (89% improvement), methodological creativity (76% improvement), and intercultural competencies (83% improvement). Participants with museum training implemented 40% more active methodologies in their classrooms. However, structural challenges persist: only 23% of teachers feel prepared to design museum experiences, 61% develop fragmented activities without curricular integration, and significant access gaps exist based on socioeconomic level. It is concluded that sustainable inter-institutional collaboration, specific teacher training, and effective curricular integration are fundamental to harness the transformative potential of museums in secondary education. The study emphasizes the need for comprehensive approaches that address both institutional limitations and pedagogical barriers to create meaningful learning ecosystems where museums and schools function as authentic partners in continuous, coherent educational experiences.
