Comparative study between Ricote Valley waterwheels (Murcia, Spain) and Larmahue ‘azudas’ (Pichidegua, Chile): The two sides of the same hydraulic heritage

Water as an environmental resource for rural societies has become a permanent concern and, even more so, for those who live from agriculture in arid and semi-arid environments. In this sense, agricultural irrigation has had to overcome various physical and human obstacles, having as a response the ingenuity and artisanal skills in search of a sustainable economy on the peasant scale. Within these ingenious answers are a set of hydraulic devices -azudas or waterwheels- that solve the problem of irrigation of local crops. These waterwheels have allowed the peoples who enjoy them, the survival and consolidation of an agrarian and cultural landscape, as are the cases of Murcia (Spain) and Larmahue (Chile). However, there is not only a great geographical distance between them, but also in issues such as heritage conservation, local development and respective tourist activity.
