Abstract

The aim of this paper is to reflect on the contentious issue of national identity politics in Subsaharian Africa, using the opportunity of the global political and economic crisis. Since its
first independence until today, the African continent has developed a peculiar conflict between promoting national identities in their countries and the survival, abundance and mix of other identities, including so-called ethnic. Firstly, traditional assumptions borders between ethnic and national identities will be contested. Secondly, it will be discussed if the promotion of a national identity is, in some African countries, the best path to democratic consolidation.
Thirdly, it will be impugned the civic/citizen identity, in Africa or Europe or wherever, should always assume only a national type, as until now we also understand democracy. The specific
case of the secessionist movement in Caprivi (Namibia) will operate as a reference and empirical grounds the objectives of the article.
