The culture of the scientists of culture. Notes for the genealogy of a concept and a practice

Abstract

This paper aims to outline the genealogy of culture as a concept and a practice, going back in history to two significant moments: the Greco-Roman and eighteenth-century Europe.
This aims to identify continuities and discontinuities, and propose two theses on what had happened over the last decades in the ethnographic science. Both theses are related to the oblivion. (1) Oblivion of what at the time of the last crisis and ethnographic refounding was at the heart of the matter: culture as a practice. (2) Oblivion of the study of the “anthropos” in anthropology, while the concept of culture, shredded, ended up being everywhere.
