Abstract

Abstract: This article analyzes the functioning of a ritual language within the Umbanda religion from the perspective of the ethnography of communication. Afro-Brazilian rites pose a complex linguistic situation for their Spanish-speaking practitioners: the ritual language used is Portuguese; the deities and their respective greetings come from the Yoruba language; while the complex performances of their practitioners -which include verbal and paralinguistic elements- are manifested in a kind of Portuñol. Through fieldwork in a temple in the city of Córdoba, Argentina, we analyze the speech community, the communicative situation, the events and speech acts that make up a social space where the mastery of the ritual language puts the actors in contact with the spiritual forces of that religion, generating the performative effect of the rite and defining the place occupied by each participant.
